The piece of art work that caught my eye was "Big with rift" by Steven Siegel. Steven Siegal was born in white plains, NY 1953 and now works in Redhook, NY. The piece is made out of newspapers and now is connected to the earth. Steven Siegal built this in 2009 with a landscape setting. Te Decrdova Museum purposely made an open area just for Seigal's work. The sculpture is additive because he had volunteers to help him add on newspapers. The stack of newspapers symbolizes society's remains are buried under earth and vegetation, subjected to erosion, deterioration and historic memory.
The sculpture, "Big, with rift" is rectangular because its columns of stacked newspapers side by side. Some or most of the newspaper's color has faded. The colors are gray from the paper, brown because of the decomposing paper along with dirt and faded black because of the washed out text of the newspapers. The old newspapers are rough texture because they have been decomposing and have been ripped up, rained on, snowed on and has faced many storms in the past. The newspapers are tightly impacted, the top of the sculpture has vines connected to the newspapers, showing that the earth is taking back the past.
When I see the sculpture, "Big, with rift" it makes me think about the past and what might have happened back then. The sculpture makes you think and wonder about the past. The story of this peice was to symbolize the past and how it buries into the earth as time goes by. This peice is realistic because it has actual newspapers from the past. I do personally like the sculpture, "Big, with rift" because it has a great idea to show historic memory without actually telling a story of what happened. I love the meaning to it, now earth is " taking over" it as well because it shows that its the circle of life because of the decomposing newspapers.

My photos
The photo with the yellow and red rope. I angled the camera so that the viewer can see the yellow rope in clear focus and detailed and the red side of the rope was blurred in the background to show that the colors change. The building photograph, I decided to angle the camera so that it focuses on the texture but also shows that the building keeps going up.
